This week our 2nd grade classes read Laura Murray's The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School. After reading, students put their direction following skills to the test by creating their own gingerbread according to the guidelines of the "official" gingerbread glyph. After determining what their individual gingerbread should look like based on the glyph, each class went to one of four places based on the book. Mrs. Hatesohl's gingerbread went into to gym, Miss Liberty's class visited the nurse's office, Mrs. Mustain's class went to the art room, and Mrs. Williams' gingerbread ended up in the principal's office. Don't worry, just like the story, all of our little gingerbread creators ended up safe and sound back in their classrooms!

This week all of our bobcats have been busy with coding as part of Hour of Code. This celebratory week is intended to allow students the opportunity to learn about coding and how computer "language" works at a kid friendly level. Each of our grade levels participated in Hour of Code through an app on the iPad or through the actual Hour of Code website. Please note that all of the apps used this week are free! Take a look below to see what our bobcats have been coding! Kinders - The Foos (app) 1st Grade - Kodable (app) 2nd Grade - Run Marco (app) 3rd Grade - LightBot (app) 4th Grade - Hour of Code (code.org) 5th Grade - PlayLab (code.org)
Our 2nd graders have been learning about various inventions and inventors as part of their social studies curriculum. In the library, we have incorporated these ideas by starting to learn about the Sibert Medal, an yearly award given to children-friendly nonfiction books. After learning about the award, we read a recent Sibert Medal winning recipient, Balloons over Broadway, a book about puppeteer Tony Sarg who invented the very first ballon floats for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade! 2nd graders will work with one other Sibert book about an invention prior to winter break, and then additional Sibert Medal books in February not related to inventions/inventors.
