This week, our Kinder Stars wrapped up their Mo Willems unit. During this time, students explored Elephant and Piggie books and made an Elephant or Piggie puppet. They also experienced various Pigeon books and created their own Pigeon paintings. We finished with Knuffle Bunny to talk about setting and characters. Students created their own replica of the book by selecting a favorite spot here at school to serve as their black and white photograph background with a cartoon (and colorful) version of themselves as the character. Along the way, students also had the change to read aloud with our Mo Willems stuffed book buddies.

We're a little behind in posting one our our projects... First and fifth grades have been pretty busy! 1st grade recently complete a giant unit on the Caldecott Award. During these lessons, we used our stop light model for Creepy Carrots to identify the problem and solution of the story, completed a building challenge by building fences for some creepy carrots, read Extra Yarn and used a bit of our own on some paper animals, and participated in a "Caldecott Quest" to find our individual, favorite Caldecott books. Once students chose a favorite book, they completed a project about it using the ChaterPix app. Follow the link below to see our projects! 5th grade completed our annual "someday" project based on the book Someday by Eileen Spinelli. Just like the main character in the book, students identified something they would like to be/do SOMEDAY and think about how they are preparing for it today. Students drew illustrations to match, and then, recorded their projects using the Clips app. 5th graders also completed another digital project using iMovie in teams this week. During the previous year, students learned about Lawrence illustrator Stephen Johnson and worked with his book Alphabet City. This year, students located and photographed numbers found from everyday objects around our school in order to create their own version of Stephen Johnson's City by Numbers. BOTH projects can be seen by following the link below!
Upon returning from Spring Break, 2nd grade continued weekend festivities with Laura Murray's The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose in the School. Students were so excited to continue with this series of books after reading and comparing a few others back in December. Students then used a graphic novel page to created their own story involving the Gingerbread Man and another character. Some students chose to continue the story of the leprechaun, some chose figures from another holiday that they celebrate, and some chose characters just for fun. Take a look at a few examples below!
Our kinder stars finished our final lesson of our Pete the Cat library unit this week. Aside from enjoying lots of Pete the Cat books, we also practiced with direction words, practiced retelling a story, incorporated some math skills, and worked on growing our memories with a matching game. Below are some pictures of our stations from this week. Nextup on the kindergarten agenda...Mo Willems!
