Mrs. Williams
okay...so it's really Balloons Over Broadway, but we have books and bookshelves, not crowded city streets. Our 2nd graders recently read Balloons Over Broadway during a previous week, a biography about Tony Sarg, a famous puppeteer who invented the first balloon floats when the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade first began. After being introduced to the story, student teams worked to create their own version of Tony Sarg's second attempt at a balloon float, which was modeled after the concept of a large-scale Indonesian rod puppet. Below are their team creations by class. We hope you enjoy our parade! Mrs. Hatesohl Mrs. Heider Mrs .Mustain Mrs. Williams

This week our Kinder Stars put all of their letter station practice to good use! On small teams, students completed a scavenger hunt to find a tub with their assigned letter. In each tub, students had to pick the one thing whose initial sound matched the sound of their letter. Students then completed a second scavenger hunt after learning that books in our Everybody section are organized by the author's last name. Teams then set out to find one book written by an author's last name that matched their letter. Once their two scavenger hunts were completed, teams learned how to use the PicCollage app. Each team created a collage that shared their letter, the book they selected, their tub item, and a team selfie. Take a look at our Kinder PicCollage Alphabet Book below! As a tie-in to their current earth systems unit for science, 2nd graders used ebooks during a library lesson to research specific information about one of six different earth events: earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, or volcanoes. After gathering their information, student teams began creating a PicCollage as a way to share about their earth event with the class. While completed PicCollages were posted through our projector, other teams completed their note-taking page for the other five earth events they were still needing to learn about. Take a look at their creations below! Mrs. Hatesohl Mrs. Heider Mrs. Mustain Mrs. Williams Over the past five weeks, our 1st graders have been very busy creating and describing their invented animals as part of a library project that coincides with their classroom science unit on animal adaptations. After drawing various animal adaptations from a bucket for an animal's covering (fur or feather), feet (webbed or talons) and mouth (beak or sharp teeth) during our first week, students used these adaptations to determine an actual (real life) animal that shared that adaptation. Based on their three actual animal, students then had to create a new (make believe) animal that featured the adaptations they had selected. These selected adaptations can be seen in the illustrations students created to match their informational writing component for our projects. Be sure to follow the 1st grade project link below to view your student's adaptation project!
