Check-out
All students Kindergarten through 5th grade are able to check out books for up to two weeks before needing to renew or return them. Students are always welcome to renew their books unless someone else has reserved it. K-3 classes have a 10 minute checkout window every week on the same day as their scheduled library time, while 4&5 are able to come independently during an appropriate time designated by their classroom teacher.
Fines for lost and overdue books
Students will receive verbal and written notices for overdue books. An email to parents will be sent out asking for the return of the book or payment to replace it once a book is still out four weeks past its due date. Replacement fines are determined by the current price for a replacement book through a library vendor. Oftentimes, ripped pages can be repaired; please don't let this deter you from returning one of our books - accidents happen!
Vision
The Learning Commons of Langston Hughes Elementary is to be a place to connect, collect, and create. Students, staff, administration, and community members alike will utilize the Learning Commons in order to connect and collaborate with others. It will serve as a place for them to collect, locate, and apply information as needed. Equally important, the Learning Commons of Langston Hughes will provide students and staff the opportunity to create and produce quality educational pieces in a variety of print and multi-media formats.
Why a learning commons?
Our school is fortunate enough to have an amazing library! But, really our space is more than just that. It's a place for small groups, classes, grade levels, and teachers to come in and interact with one another. Our learning commons is intended to be a "hub" for our building where ideas and creativity can come to life, print and media sources can be used to their fullest, and projects can be developed and shared. You're more than welcome to call our wonderful space a library; after all, that is one of its key purposes. Please just keep in mind all of the other components our learning commons offers too!

Guided Reading Level
Guided reading levels are essentially goals set at various points within each grade level for where teachers and students work towards achieving. Once you are aware of what your student's guided reading level is, please encourage them to select appropriate books, whether it be through our school library catalog or through Scholastic Book Wizard. Both of these resources have links below.
