Our primary students have voted! There was an overwhelming consensus - almost unanimous, in fact - for which Bill Martin Jr. nominee should be the winner this year. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt was by far the most popular book amongst our youngest friends here at Langston Hughes. We are eagerly waiting to find out who is the official winner, but our vote is in!

5th graders have been preparing for Kate's arrival for a few weeks now. Aside from reading book one of her 43 Old Cemetery Road series with their classroom teachers, students watched some interview clips of Kate to learn a little bit more background knowledge about her childhood and experiences as an author during their library time. While reading Dying to Meet You, students noted Kate's use of language and letter writing, not to mention her creativity with character names. As part of their library time, students learned that these particular skills also carry over into another set of Kate's books - the Regarding series. In book one, Regarding the Fountain, characters with water related names communicate primarily via letters. Prior to reading an excerpt of the book aloud, students worked in groups to match up character names with pictures of what was actually being represented. For example, with the character Principal Wally Russ, teams needed to match his name up to the picture of a walrus. During her presentation, Kate gave some neat writing tips and gave students a new strategy for creating their own stories. After explaining and modeling her "clock (Hollywood) method" Kate had students apply their new knowledge by writing their own stories. A handful of brave volunteers shared their short story lines and Kate provided them with immediate feedback and ideas for their creations. Kate even stayed for lunch where two students from each of our 5th grade classes got to attend.
