For this current round of lessons, our 3rd through 5th graders have been reviewing fiction versus nonfiction and the various genres that fall into each category. They've been practicing differentiating the two and categorizing various genres through an interactive Smart Notebook activity and a sort using Scholastic book orders (sorts vary in their difficulty based on grade level). These grade levels are also practicing to organize fiction books based on the first three letters of the author's last name. Some of our 4th and 5th grade students... Here's an example to show how different grades are completing different types of sorts.

I should have taken a "before" picture...really. You wouldn't believe what all of this looked like on a bunch of heavy, wooden carts taking up almost every inch of this space. Words cannot even begin to describe the magnitude of time and effort so many people contributed to making our Learning Commons the wonderful space it is. Building administrations and paras, in addition to many district administrators, personnel, TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), and learning coaches, all helped to transform the space into its current state. Last Friday, grades 1-5 had the opportunity to see our new space and learn about our Learning Commons. I hope they're all as eager and excited as I am for the year ahead of us!
