Our 5th graders have been very busy learning about author Kate Klise and her books since getting back from winter break. Over the past few weeks, students have had the opportunity to enjoy the first book of her Dying to Meet You series. Many of Klise's books are written in letter format, where the entire story is relayed through correspondence. Occasionally, additional information is conveyed through the use of newspaper articles. With that in mind, 5th grade spent this week's lesson reviewing text features. Students began by matching text features to their correct definitions in teams and then practiced locating them within a section of the newspaper. Teams also had to evaluate HOW that text feature attributed to their knowledge and understanding of their particular article, ad, or information. Next week, we'll get to explore some of her picture books prior to her visit.
