We're official! We've got the certificate! As you may recall from our previous post, students of Langston Hughes just finished celebrating International Dot Day. While Dot Day encourages students that they can make a difference on their own, we also talked about how sometimes people may need to join and work together in order to make an impact. Our artwork is now on display in the Learning Commons and truly makes an impact in our space!

This week, all 23 of our classes came into the Learning Commons to celebrate International Dot Day. This event is based on Peter Reynold's book The Dot and is intended to encourage students that they can make a difference. We celebrated Dot Day by watching a video rendition of The Dot, creating our own dots, completing dot-to-dots, and eating...you guessed it...dots! Student projects will be pieced together in order to help students further see that while one person can make an impact, when many people come together, the impact can be even greater! A big thank you goes out to our staff, volunteers, and PTO for helping to make this event a success!
For the past few weeks, 2nd graders at Langston Hughes have read a variety of books by Kevin Henkes in their classrooms. This week in the Learning Commons, students selected one of "the mouse books" by Kevin Henkes to answer three literature questions:
*Who is the main character? *What problem do they overcome? *What is the message of the story? Students responded to these questions and created an illustration to upload on AudioBoo. Their projects can be accessed by clicking on the button below - happy viewing! During this initial round of lessons, 2nd graders are reviewing key parts of a book and spending a lot of time on spine labels. Why you ask? Spine labels tell us where all of our library books "live" in the Learning Commons! For fiction books in particular, this means being able to identify and locate books according to the first three letters of the author's last name. 2nd graders have been spending their monthly library lesson practicing their ABC order skills in three different ways: Our 2nd graders are well on their way to finding fiction! |
