This week, our 2nd grade Bobcats learned about the concept of a series of books written by an author. Students had the opportunity to explore five different series written by Cynthia Rylant through 5 minute stations. While this experience helped them to understand the concept of a series, a main focus of our time was also spent on giving good character descriptions based on their appearance throughout that series. For example, one of the series students looked at was Mr. Putter and Tabby. We talked about how describing the characters as a man and a cat could lead to a very different picture in each of our minds. If we used great describing words (adjectives), however, like an old man with grey hair and glasses and an orange and white striped cat, the images in our minds would be much more similar. Other series students used while completing this activity included Henry and Mudge, Annie and Snowball, High-Rise Private Eyes, and Poppleton. |
