This week, our 1st-5th grade bobcats participated in the Dewey Olympics. The primary purpose of this lesson was to 1 - teach students about how nonfiction books are organized using the Dewey Decimal System and 2 - give students the opportunity to determine which section of nonfiction books they tend to be most interested in. For this lesson, we had five "Olympic rings" spread out on the floor; each ring representing Dewey section within our learning commons. Because of our theme, all books out on the rings were related to the summer Olympics, the country of Brazil, or the customs/culture of countries that participated in the Olympics. After visiting each station, students determined which Dewey section they liked best and deserved their gold "medal". Below are some pictures of our Dewey Olympics.
