Monday after school we celebrated with a weaving and knitting theme. Our Kinders practiced weaving with felt and on baskets with yarn, 1st and 2nd graders made paper weaving projects, 3rd graders did some straw knitting, and our 4th and 5th grades both participated in finger knitting. On Tuesday, our 'Made at the Library' theme was food. Kinders and Firsties used fruit to make worms out of green grapes and snakes out of strawberries and bananas. They also went home with a fruit dip to try at home. Our 2nd-5th students completed a variety of food stations that included decorating cupcakes as tigers and monkeys, caramel apple slices with sprinkles, and banana sandwiches with frosting and Nilla wafers. The final 'Made at the Library' event took place on Thursday, as students did stamping and printing activities. K-2nd grade students used stamps and decorated their thumbprints in order to make cards and bookmarks. They also created artwork using different vegetables as 'stamps' and listened to a read aloud of Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett. Stamping and printing for 3rd-5th graders meant creating exploding paper books to highlight important and interesting things about themselves.
These events could not have taken place without help from many people. A big thank you goes out to our PTO for helping with materials needed and to Hy-Vee on 23rd Street for donating some of our various food items. A giant thank you also goes out to our many teachers who were generous enough to stay after school and help facilitate various stations and activities. Finally, thank you to all of our participants. We hope you had a great time and will consider celebrating National Library Week with us again next year - whatever that might entail! :) Be sure to look through all of the pictures from National Library Week on the slideshow below.
