The first book we read in the learning commons was The Scraps Book, a nonfiction autobiography by Lois Ehlert. Interesting fact! - Lois Ehlert happens to be the illustrator of Bill Martin Jr's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. | The second nominee K-2 students will hear in the learning commons is Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads by Bob Shea. After reading, students used a key based upon their birthday month and date to create their "outlaw" name. . |
Primary students are participating in the Bill Martin Jr. Award again this year. This award, targeted for K-2 with various fiction and nonfiction picture books, is celebrated in Kansas to honor author/illustrator Bill Martin Jr., originally from Hiawatha. Some of his most well-known books include Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. This year, there are ten nominees, which will be completed as read alouds - two in the learning commons and the remaining eight in class. After reading this year's books, classes will vote on their favorite in order to help us determine which nominee to submit as a school. We'll let you know our winning book at Langston Hughes the first week in February!
