In our first lesson, students met two characters: Electra the Elephant and Mizzle the Mouse. Students' role was to act as detectives and discover what they could learn about each character based on the information each character had shared. Through this activity, they learned that while both characters created a unique digital footprint, Electra's digital footprint was not as safe because she shared a lot of private information. She failed to realize (or forgot) that most people on the internet are strangers!
During this week's lesson, we reviewed the difference between private and personal information and talked about how some websites might require us the have a username. We further discussed that usernames should only include personal information that do not reveal clues as to who we actually are. After interviewing a classmate about their favorites, students practiced creating three safe usernames for their partner, so that later in life, when they are needing to create a username, they have the tools to do so safely.
