The past couple days, our K-2 students began our month of Bill Martin Jr books. Every year, our primary students take part in selecting the nominee of their choice to help us determine this year's winner for Langston Hughes. Two of the ten nominees are used as library lessons, and the remaining eight are read in the classroom with their teacher. Students will vote for their favorite nominee in February with their classroom teacher, and the class favorite will be submitted. Not only does this particular award expose our youngest readers to a fun and engaging set of fiction and nonfiction picture books, but it also helps them to gain an understanding of the process we use for our intermediate students who participate in the William Allen White Award at an independent level.
Our first Bill Martin Jr. nominee for our library lesson has been Sarabella's Thinking Cap by Judy Schachner. About half of our primary classes completed this particular lesson yesterday and today, while a handful of classes will be doing this lesson on Tuesday. After learning about the award itself and reading the book, students created their own imagination caps to take home. It has been so fun to see their "daydreams", and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest. Below are a few samples from some of our kindergarten classes. Today our Kinder Stars had their first experience on the PicCollage app. After selecting one letter from the alphabet, student teams completed two scavenger hunts: one looking for an item to match their letter sound, and the other to find a book written by an author whose last name started with their letter. With their scavenger hunt materials in hand, students learned how to navigate through PicCollage to create a team letter project. Take a look at our ABC book below! Intermediate classes closed 2018 with a new library game - Biography Bowling. Much like Library Football, students raced the clock to find as many biography books as possible that corresponded to our bowling pins. At the end of ten frames (3 minutes each), classroom teachers were put in the hot seat, with one roll to knock down as many of the 20 pins as possible. This "bonus" was then added to each class score. This year's winning class was Mrs. Czarnecki's 5th grade with a total of 60 points.
These past few weeks, our 4th and 5th grade Bobcats have been working to create infographics about our school. Students could choose to work independently or with a partner as they turned written text about Langston Hughes Elementary into engaging and appealing pages for readers. Our infographic project was inspired by one of this year's William Allen White nominees, Animals by the Numbers: A Book of Infographics by Steve Jenkins. Our 3rd grade students will complete our infographic project later this spring. 4th Grade Ashley Desmond McGee 5th Grade Czarnecki King Rainbolt Wallace 3rd grade has been very busy learning about how human behavior has impacted the rainforest and the tundra over time. After learning more about issues impacting both ecosystems, classes completed a comparison matrix to organize specific information. From there, students created a PicCollage about one of the ecosystems to share what's happening there and why, two animals being impacted, and what we people can do to help. Booth/Bukaty Longino McLenon Truex After getting an introduction to community workers in a recent Reading Street unit, 1st graders completed their first research activity in the library in order to learn more about some of the important people that make up our community. Using PebbleGo, students researched four key questions about a specific community worker:
After learning about the Sibert Award, 2nd grade students explored their first Sibert book, Balloons Over Broadway. Through this informative book, students learned about inventor Tony Sarg and his contribution to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Like Tony, students created balloon floats in teams. Take a look at our Balloons Over Langston display in the slideshow below! 2nd grade and 4th grade students have been busy wrapping up our first trimester with digital projects! Our 2nd grade Bobcats used the Chatterpix app to share information about an animal they researched in their classroom as part of their ecosystem unit for science. 4th graders completed a research unit in the library and created digital projects using the Clips app to share their new knowledge. You can follow the links below to view their work!
